Deadline for transitional UK REACH registration extended

The UK authorities extend the deadlines for transitional registration from EU REACH to UK REACH by three years.

Businesses that want to keep their activities in the UK must register their substances under the UK REACH scheme. Earlier this year, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) carried out a consultation on the possible extension of registration deadlines among stakeholders.

In November 2022, based on the stakeholders’ responses, Defra has proposed that the initial deadlines be extended by three years for all tonnage bands. The initial deadlines are as follows:

  • 27 October 2023 for substances included on the EU REACH candidate list before UK REACH came into effect; CMR-substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne a year or more; substances that are very toxic to aquatic life and manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes or more a year; and all substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1,000 tonnes or more a year
  • 27 October 2025 for substances added to the UK REACH candidate list before the 2023 submission deadline; and all substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tonnes or more a year
  • 27 October 2027 for all substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more a year.

An extension of the deadlines must now be officially approved by the English, Scottish and Welsh governments.

As a consequence of the above, the statutory dates in UK REACH for compliance check of 20% of the registration dossiers will also be extended.
