ECHA publishes first assessment of a group of chemicals

Phthalates are among the first structurally similar substances for which group assessments have been made to establish their regulatory needs.

ECHA’s chemical database consists of more than 21 000 registered substances. In 2019, ECHA began to address structurally similar chemicals in groups to speed up the regulatory action. The aim is to identify hazardous substances and to control their risks more quickly.

ECHA recently published the first assessment of substances in groups covering 450 substances in 19 groups.

Regulatory effects
Phthalates are among the first substance groups to be assessed. It has been suggested to restrict certain phthalates in articles, while others need harmonised classification and labelling as well as identification as substances of very high concern (SVHCs). Pyrazoles is another group that has been assessed resulting in a proposed restriction of use in fertilisers in order to protect workers and the environment.

The assessments are published on ECHA’s website in the Public Activities Coordination Tool (PACT).

Further data or regulatory risk management measures are still needed for the remaining groups. ECHA aims to have full clarity of all registered substances by 2027.
