End of special UK permits for hand sanitisers

The UK authorities have announced the termination of the special short-term permit scheme that was set up for hand sanitisers at the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic companies were given permission to derogate from the requirements in the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). More specifically, applicants seeking product approval of hand sanitisers could be granted a short-term permission without having to document fulfilment of the criteria in Article 55(1).

In early April, the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced the discontinuation of the special short-term permit scheme for hand sanitisers.

There is still a need for hand sanitisers, but the current demand can be met by products supplied under the normal BPR requirements informs HSE.
