New limit values for arsenic in food

The EU Commission has submitted a public consultation on new maximum levels of inorganic arsenic in certain foods.

There are already EU limit values for inorganic arsenic in rice and rice products. The new proposal sets limit values for inorganic arsenic in fishery products, infant formulae, fruit juices and salt. See the proposed limit values here.

The proposed maximum limit values are based on new data that show an increased risk of exposure to inorganic arsenic from the proposed foods.

It is possible to submit comments on the proposed values through the Member State authorities. The consultation deadline is 7 December 2021.
