Sweden tightens up on substance requirements for drinking water

In a new bill the Swedish Food Agency proposes to tighten the limit values in drinking water for four PFAS substances along with the values for arsenic, lead and cadmium.

The decision is a result of the European Food Safety Authority’s resolve to sharpen its assessment of how many PFAS substances it is safe to ingest per week throughout life without being exposed to a health risk.

The Swedish Food Agency has decided to establish a limit value as low as possible for the four PFASs in question. At the same time the Agency lowers the limit value for three other substances.

The proposed limit values are:

  • PFAS (sum of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA og PFHxS): 4 nanograms per litre
  • Arsenic: 5 micrograms per litre
  • Lead: 5 micrograms per litre
  • Cadmium: 0.50 micrograms per litre

According to the bill (text in Swedish), the limit values become effective as of 1 January 2023.
