Titanium dioxide classified as carcinogen

A harmonised classification has been decided which means that titanium dioxide in powder form must be classified as a category 2 carcinogen.

The classification as a category 2 carcinogen applies to titanium dioxide in powder form containing 1% or more of titanium dioxide particles with diameter ≤ 10 μm. The classification has been decided by the European Commission and will be published in the 14th adaptation to the technical progress (ATP) of the CLP regulation.

As a result of the classification, liquid and solid mixtures containing titanium dioxide must include the following warnings:

  • Liquid mixtures containing 1% or more of titanium dioxide particles with aerodynamic diameter equal to or below 10 μm shall bear the following statement: EUH211: 'Warning! Hazardous respirable droplets may be formed when sprayed. Do not breathe spray or mist.'
  • Solid mixtures containing 1% or more of titanium dioxide shall bear the following statement: EUH212: 'Warning! Hazardous respirable dust may be formed when used. Do not breathe dust.'
