Removal of flavouring substances from Union list

The European Commission recommends removal of five flavouring substances from the Union list of flavouring substances. Scientific data cannot rule out concern for their genotoxicity properties.

Damascone flavouring substances have a lovely scent of roses that one does not associate with toxic effects. When Damascone and other substances were initially included on the Union list of certain flavouring substances it was, however, with a condition that safety concerns of their effect on human health should be further evaluated.

Additional scientific data have since been evaluated, but the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers that the submitted data are insufficient to rule out the genotoxic potential of the substances.

Consequently, the European Commission recommends removal of five substances from the Union list in order to protect human health:

  • alpha-Damascone (Fl no 07.134),
  • delta-Damascone (Fl no. 07.130),
  • cis-1-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)but-2-en-1-one (Fl no. 07.225),
  • trans-1-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)but-2-en-1-one (Fl no. 07.226) and
  • alpha-Damascenone (Fl no. 07.231)

The removal is expected to become effective shortly.
