Consolidate calculations, environmental assessments, and documentation regarding discharges into the aquatic environment into a single digital process.
In collaboration with HOFOR, Fors, and Envafors (Sorø Forsyning), DHI is developing a user-friendly digital tool for assessing discharges into watercourses and coastal waters. The project runs from January 2026 to December 2027 with support from the Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (MUDP), an initiative under the Ministry of the Environment. Throughout the project, the new tool will undergo continuous testing in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure high technical quality and practical applicability.
The aim is to develop, test, and deliver a digital solution that can be used by both applicants and approving authorities when assessing discharges into the aquatic environment. The objective is to support more consistent, transparent, and efficient assessments of stormwater and wastewater discharges affecting water, sediment, and biota.
The new wastewater directive means that many existing discharge permits must be revised, while requirements for the documentation and assessment of environmentally hazardous pollutants are being tightened.
Many organizations currently devote significant resources to calculations, assessments, and documentation regarding discharges.
The digital tool consolidates calculations, environmental assessments, and documentation into a single, integrated process.
The tool was developed to make the process of handling discharge permits simpler, more consistent, and more transparent. By combining calculations, environmental assessments, and documentation into one process, both applicants and authorities gain a shared basis for evaluating the impact of discharges on the aquatic environment.
The tool can be used across organizations.
The tool is being developed by working closely together with municipalities, utility companies, authoraties, and industr associations.
The project draws from interviews, workshops, and ongoing user involvement to ensure the soution is practical for use in the day-to-da processing of discharge permits.
A utility company wishes to assess the environmental impact of a discharge.
The tool consolidates calculations, environmental assessments, and documentation into a single workflow, providing a common basis for dialogue between the applicant and the authority.
