Consultation on lower safe intake of bisphenol A

New studies of bisphenol A in food have led EFSA to propose a significant lowering of the tolerable daily intake. The proposal is open for public consultation.

Most recently in 2015, a temporary tolerable daily intake (TDI) of bisphenol A was set at 4 micrograms per kilogram of body weight/day. Since then, several studies have been carried out that have prompted the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, to propose a new and stricter TDI of:

0.04 nanograms per kilogram body weight/day

This limit is 100,000 times lower than the previous one.

EFSA has submitted the proposal for public consultation, and it is open for comments until 22 February. Read more on EFSA's consultation page.

Bisphenol A can migrate from certain food contact materials such as polycarbonate to food and drink. Particularly, studies indicating adverse effects on the immune system that my result in development of allergic lung inflammation have led EFSA to propose a change in the TDI.
