Classification of new and existing substances

An update of the CLP Regulation includes harmonised classification of new substances and revised classification of certain other substances.

Examples of substances with new harmonised classifications include:

  • geraniol; (2E)-3,7-dimethylocta2,6-dien-1-ol, a common fragrance
  • MIBT (2-methyl-1,2-benzothiazol-3(2H)-one), preservative, e.g. in biocidal products

An overview of the list of harmonised classification of hazardous substances is available in Annex VI to Regulation (EU) 2020/1182, which amends the CLP Regulation.

The new and revised classifications will apply from 1 March 2022. It is possible to classify and label substances and mixtures according to the revised classifications already now.
