Miracle berry approved as novel food

Dried fruits of the miracle berry, Synsepalum dulcificum, have been approved as novel food in the EU.

The Spanish company Medicinal Gardens S.L. is the only company with authorisation to market dried miracle berry fruits, as it owns the scientific data on which the approval is based. The company is authorised to market dried miracle berry fruits for a period of five years.

The European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, has approved that the use of dried miracle berry fruits is safe for adults when added to food supplements at a maximum daily dose of 0.7 g/day.

Miracle berries contain the glycoprotein miraculin. The protein coats the taste buds and changes their receptivity so that sour foods taste sweet.
