New and higher ADI for saccharin

An EFSA panel has re-evaluated the artificial sweetener saccharin and set a higher Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI).

The previous ADI of 5 mg/kg body weight was set in 1995. After reviewing studies and surveys conducted between 1994 and February 2024, the EFSA Panel on Food Additives and Flavourings has set a new ADI of 9 mg/kg bw, which applies to all age groups and does not raise health concerns. In addition to saccharin (E 954), the new ADI includes its sodium, potassium and calcium salts.

The higher ADI is the result of restricting the manufacturing method to the so-called Remsen-Fahlberg process, which is the chemical process used to manufacture saccharin.
