New EU regulation on recycled plastic

The EU has adopted a new regulation on recycled plastics for food contact materials. It is now allowed to use new technologies to recycle plastic for new materials.

The new regulation allows production of recycled plastic either by means of a suitable recycling technology or with a new and not yet approved technology (novel technology).

New technology can be, for example, to use other polymers or to use a percentage of a non-food contact material.

Plastic must be examined for contamination
During the development period of a new technology, you are allowed to manufacture and put the product on the market.

Before doing so, you must publish a risk assessment and in addition you are obliged to regularly inspect the plastic for contamination. The purpose is partly to clear the way for introducing more technologies to the market, and partly to collect data to get the new technologies through the approval process.

The new EU regulation on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foods will be effective from the autumn of 2022 and is currently being translated into various EU languages.
