New EU rules on formaldehyde emissions

Wood-based furniture and interior car articles are subject to stricter emission limits for formaldehyde adopted by the European Commission.

According to the adopted rules, formaldehyde emissions from wood-based interior products such as furniture must not exceed a concentration of 0.062 mg/m3 in the indoor climate. This limit also applies to emission from interior articles in car cabins.

For other articles such as textiles, leather, plastics, electronics and construction materials, the emission must not exceed a limit of 0.08 mg/m3.

Transitional periods
The regulatory measures were adopted in July. Manufacturers and importers have 3 years to comply with the new emission limits. Concerning interior car articles, however, there is a 4-year period to meet the requirements.

Emission of formaldehyde may occur if formaldehyde has been used in production and is present in the article. Emission may also occur if the article contains formaldehyde releasers, which are substances that slowly release formaldehyde through chemical conversion.

Consumer protection
The rules have been introduced to protect consumers from exposure to the harmful health effects of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is highly irritating to the eyes and respiratory system at low concentrations. In higher concentrations it can cause cancer of the respiratory tract. Formaldehyde is also an allergen.
