Report from conference on PFAS substitution

DHI participated in the Danish Industry's international PFAS Conference on Alternatives in November 2024.

The conference, which was organised by Danish Industry in collaboration with the Global PFAS Science Panel, was based on the many negative effects of PFAS substances as well as the comprehensive restriction proposal put forward in 2023 by five member states, including Denmark.

The purpose of the conference was to bring different sectors together, including companies, researchers and authorities, to share experiences and to shed light on the opportunities and challenges of substitution and alternatives to the use of PFAS.

Substitution is a complex process
The conference highlighted various possible alternatives, several of which are in a very early phase. It was noted that substitution of PFAS can be both complicated and complex due to the many properties and functions of PFAS substances. As a result, a simple substitution cannot be expected, but non-chemical and technical solutions and processes must be considered in the substitution process. However, it was estimated that there are alternatives for most consumer-related applications of PFAS, such as ski wax and textile impregnation.

Substitution requires innovation in terms of development of sustainable alternatives, but not knowing which applications will be affected by a final restriction and when the restrictions will be introduced creates uncertainty and hesitation in the industry.

DHI can help your company obtain an overview and prioritize your efforts against the use of PFAS.
