Support for restricting PAHs in granules

ECHA’s scientific committee SEAC proposes new lower concentration limits for eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

The eight PAHs are identified as causing cancer and are a common constituent in granules and mulches used for instance in synthetic turf pitches and playgrounds.

The restriction proposal will ensure that the PAH exposure level remains as low as possible for the general public and workers installing or maintaining such surfaces. With the proposal the total concentration limit for PAHs in mixtures will be lowered from 100 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg.

The eight PAHs are benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[e]pyrene (BeP), benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), chrysen (CHR), benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbFA), benzo[j]fluoranthene (BjFA), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkFA) and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DBAhA).

The proposal will not affect existing fields but will ensure that the material used for maintenance is below the new limit.
