Approval of ADBAC/BKC as an active substance

The use of ADBAC/BKC as an active substance in Product Type 2 biocidal products is expected to be approved from 2025. This is evident from a draft implementing regulation from the European Commission.

Alkyl (C12-16) dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (ADBAC/BKC (C12-C16)) is used in many Product Type 2 (PT2) disinfectants and to control the growth of bacteria, fungi, etc.

According to the draft implementing regulation, two conditions must be fulfilled in the product assessment to obtain authorisation of PT2 biocidal products using ADBAC/BKC as an active substance:

  • particular attention must be paid to the exposures, the risks and the efficacy linked to any uses covered by an application for authorisation, which is not addressed in the Union level risk assessment of the active substance, and
  • particular attention must be paid to professional users.

The approval of the use of ADBAC/BKC (C12-C16) is expected to be effective from 1 July 2025.
