Authorisation required for use of DEHP in FCMs

It is now a requirement to receive permission for use of the phthalate DEHP in food contact materials (FCMs) above 0.1% by weight. This is due to the endocrine disrupting properties of the substance.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has adopted a new regulation that recognises the endocrine disrupting properties of four phthalates, including bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which are on the REACH Authorisation List.

As a result, DEHP is no longer exempt from the authorisation requirement for uses in FCMs. This means that companies are required to apply before 14 June 2023 to get permission to use the substance in FCMs in amounts above 0.1% by weight.
