Butylparaben on EU Candidate List because of endocrine disrupting effects

The preservative butylparaben has been identified as an endocrine disrupting chemical and has been included on the EU REACH Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHCs).

Butylparaben is used as a preservative in cosmetics and in skin care products. Inclusion on the Candidate List will also impact on manufacturers of medical devices as specific justification and obligations to label  endocrine disrupting substances may be required for the devices.

Butylparaben has been included on the Candidate List because of its endocrine disrupting effects. This means that the substance is one step closer to be included on the REACH Authorisation List. In that case the continued use of the substance will be subject to authorisation.
