Keep combined exposure in mind when assessing EDCs

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are found in many consumer products, and it is critical to consider the combined exposure from various sources when evaluating their risk. This is confirmed by a new study.

Working together with FORCE Technology and DTU National Food Institute, DHI's team of toxicologists recently contributed to the risk assessment in a new study of endocrine disruptors in products for pregnant women and children for the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.

The approach of the chemical analyses was to screen the content of certain substances in products made of plastic, silicone and textiles. The report substantiates that exposure to the combination of several different endocrine disruptors in products for children and pregnant women can pose a risk - even if the separate products are not considered to be a problem.

Because of this the project was an important contribution, helping us understand how combined exposure must be considered when performing risk assessments of EDCs in the future.
