Low risk of chemical exposure from gaming equipment

A survey of gaming equipment shows that there is no health risk from the electronic equipment. Only gaming chairs may pose a risk.

The hugely popular gaming activities bring users into contact with computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, headsets, gaming chairs, etc. All of these emit chemicals that can potentially contribute to adverse health effects.

In the survey of gaming equipment, the Danish Technological Institute analysed substance emissions from the equipment to the indoor climate, and DHI assessed the risk of exposure to the substances. Measurements of the indoor climate have been carried out in private homes, schools and an internet café.

Gaming chairs emit formaldehyde
Although the purchased gaming equipment emits a wide range of chemicals to the indoor air, only gaming chairs were of real concern. Chairs emitted the most substances, including formaldehyde which irritates the eyes and respiratory tract. The chairs may therefore pose a health risk when inhaling emitted substances.

Legislation in the pipeline
There are no safety requirements concerning emission of formaldehyde from gaming chairs, but new EU rules are being prepared concerning general limit values for formaldehyde in consumer products.
